Ok. This one has xen barrier support (and advertises it so minios makes
use of it), but maybe the actual backend real block driver doesn't.  To
circumvent it you can comment 

        if (dev->info.barrier == 1)
            blkfront_push_operation(dev, BLKIF_OP_WRITE_BARRIER, 0);

in extras/mini-os/blkfront.c.  That being said, that shouldn't harm the
pv-grub boot, we probably need to have a look at the actual kernel crash
too.
