Kind of crude but you could try parsing /etc/issue. 

SLES cat /etc/issue
Welcome to SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 (x86_64) - Kernel \r (\l).

Fedora cat /etc/issue
Fedora Core release 4 (Stentz)
Kernel \r on an \m
